Two women (60s) injured as car crashes into shop in Co Wicklow town

Gardaí and emergency services attended the scene of a road traffic accident shortly before 2pm, in which a car had mounted the pavement and crashed through the front of the Euro Saver shop. A works vehicle was also involved.

It has been confirmed that three pedestrians were struck, with two females in their 60s sustaining injuries and one of those women remaining in hospital in a stable condition in St Vincent’s Hospital in Dublin. Eye witnesses have said they saw a person on the ground after the crash with a serious leg injury.

The third pedestrian, a woman in her 50s, was treated at the scene. The driver of the works vehicle did not require immediate medical treatment. Gardaí are treating the incident as an accident.

A spokesperson from Bray Garda Station said that the driver, a female in her 80s, is also in hospital, having sustained minor injuries from the air bag and seat belt.

In a statement, they said: “Diversions remain in place on Bray Main Street after a collision at approximately 1.30pm, when an elderly lady collided with a cherry picker on the Main Street and lost control, which led to the vehicle mounting the footpath, striking a number of pedestrians.

“Three pedestrians were struck in the accident. One has a serious injury but is stable in hospital. One was uninjured and another sustained a minor injury.

“The driver is in hospital from injuries sustained from air bag/seat belt.”

A member of staff at Boots, on the opposite side of the street, said she saw a car “swerve and lose control and just drove straight into the [Euro] store. It looked pretty serious,” she said. She said that, given it was a nice day, the streets were “busy” and “everyone rushed to the scene, everyone was flustered, everyone was out and about”.

She remained inside but from the window of the store she said that “there was three injured that we did see through the window. It was pretty grim.”
