Republic of Ireland vs Hungary predictions

The countdown to Euro 2024 is on, but the Republic of Ireland will be watching the tournament unfold from their sofas.

International friendlies against Hungary and Portugal have been lined up for the next few days, but after that the Irish players will head off on their holidays.

That is because, for the second edition in a row, Ireland have failed to qualify for the European Championship. In truth, they did not even get close.

A tough draw certainly did not help, but a return of six points from a possible 24 was still hugely disappointing. Two victories over Gibraltar is all they could muster, with home and away defeats by each of France, the Netherlands and Greece.

Their failure to do better led to the departure of Stephen Kenny last November. Remarkably, Ireland have still not found a full-time replacement for their most recent permanent boss, who is now at the helm of St Patrick’s Athletic.

Lee Carsley, Chris Coleman, Neil Lennon, Gus Poyet, Roy Keane, Damien Duff and Janne Andersson have all been linked with the position, which has now been unfilled for almost seven months.

Willy Signol, Chris Hughton and Steve Bruce are the latest names in the frame, while interim boss John O’Shea could become a serious contender if Ireland get a positive result or two in the upcoming friendlies.

The situation does not reflect well on the Football Association of Ireland (FAI), especially as O’Shea has admitted to being in the dark over his future beyond these two games.

Bear in mind, too, that this is the former Manchester United defender’s first taste of management at any level, although he was previously part of Kenny’s coaching staff and has worked with Wayne Rooney in the club game.

Ireland hope to make a full-time appointment ahead of the resumption of the Nations League in September, but the process to date does not exactly inspire confidence in the FAI decision-makers.

Republic of Ireland vs Hungary betting tips

The Republic of Ireland will play host to Hungary in an international friendly on Tuesday night.

Hungary to win – 13/8 (talkSPORT BET)

Since November 2021, the Republic of Ireland have beaten only one national team currently in the top 80 of the FIFA World Rankings.

That does not bode well for this duel with Hungary, who sit 26th in those standings – their highest position since 2016 – ahead of the Euros.

Hungary will head to Germany believing they can advance to the knockout phase. They have been drawn with the hosts in Group A, where they, Switzerland and Scotland will likely compete for a second-place finish.

Hungary topped their group at Euro 2016 and performed admirably three years ago, almost advancing to the knockout rounds despite having to face France, Germany and Portugal in the first phase.

They have beaten England (twice) and Germany in the last couple of years, so Ireland will be in for a tough night at the Aviva Stadium.

Tip a Hungary win at 13/8 with talkSPORT BET

Under 2.5 goals – 3/5 (talkSPORT BET)

Scoring goals has been a problem for the Republic of Ireland for some time. They managed just nine in Euro 2024 qualifying – and seven of those came against Gibraltar.

Excluding those two meetings with the minnows, Ireland have found the back of the net three  times in their last nine games, drawing a blank in six of them.

Even worse, the biggest source of excitement within the Irish setup is out injured. Evan Ferguson endured a frustrating season at Brighton & Hove Albion and is currently nursing an ankle problem.

Hungary manager Marco Rossi will want to give minutes to numerous players on Tuesday, so we will likely see plenty of in-game changes.

Both of Hungary’s games so far in 2024 featured under 2.5 goals and this could be another relatively low-scoring affair.

Barnabas Varga to score any time – 13/5 (talkSPORT BET)

This time last year, it looked like Roland Sallai would lead the line for Hungary at Euro 2024.

But after scoring just three goals in 27 Bundesliga appearances for Freiburg this season, Sallai may be about to lose his place.

The alternative is Barnabas Varga, who made his debut for Hungary last year and has scored four times in nine appearances for his country.

He has also had an excellent campaign at club level (albeit at a lower level than Sallai), notching 29 goals in all competitions for Ferencvaros in Hungary’s top tier.

Varga looks set to start up front against the Republic of Ireland. He will be full of confidence after a strong club campaign and determined to make a mark as Rossi ponders whether Varga or Sallai will be his go-to centre-forward this summer.

Choose Barnabas Varga as an anytime scorer at 13/5 with talkSPORT BET
