Manchester United legend Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has appeared to deny the rumours linking him with becoming the Republic of Ireland national team’s next manager.

The Ireland job has been vacant since Stephen Kenny left the role after failing to qualify for Euro 2024.

Former United defender John O’Shea is currently serving as interim manager and oversaw the side’s latest round of games in March.

But on Friday, The Irish Times reported that the Football Association of Ireland intend to announce their new head coach next week on Wednesday or Thursday.

Around the same time, surprising rumours began to swirl suggesting that Solskjaer was in contention for the job, with odds on him taking up the reins slashed by bookmakers.

The former Norway striker has been out of work since getting sacked by United in 2022 and has recently dropped hints about a return to management.

But it appears it won’t be with Ireland, with Athletic reporter Andy Mitten claiming that Solskjaer turned down the opportunity months ago.

Next permanent Republic of Ireland manager odds:

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer – 3/10 (was 80/1)

Steve Bruce – 7/2

John O’Shea – 10/1

Anthony Barry – 12/1

Gus Poyet – 12/1

Roy Keane – 14/1

‘Keep getting asked about the Ole Gunnar Solskjaer for Republic of Ireland job story,’ Mitten wrote on Twitter.

‘Spoke to him. He has no idea where it came from.

‘He has complete respect for the country and did speak briefly about the job in January, but decided it wouldn’t be right for him.’

Some of Solskjaer’s former United teammates are the frontrunners for the job, including O’Shea, Roy Keane and Steve Bruce.

Whoever becomes the new manager will be tasked with qualifying Ireland for the 2026 World Cup, and guiding the Boys in Green through Euro 2028 which the country is hosting alongside the UK.
