Kilkenny kick off Towns Cup campaign in dominant fashion

Must read

A Podge Mahon-inspired Kilkenny kicked off their quest to reclaim the Provincial Towns Cup in emphatic style on Sunday against a disappointing Clondalkin.

Mahon picked up a hat-trick in a Kilkenny rout at Foulkstown.

Clondalkin brought a very inexperienced crew to Kilkenny, 10 of the side making their debut in this competition.

They had first use of the wind which was designed to build confidence.

It didn’t work out that way.

Podge Mahon and Steve Atkinson plundered tries for Kilkenny before back-to-back yellow cards reduced Clon’ to 13 at one point.

This gave the hosts the upper hand and they exploited the visitors for tries by Hugh Corkery and Wes Carter, who scored from a rolling maul, to make it 23-0 at the break.

Captain and Conahyman Garry Dunne and Mahon added tries in the 42nd and 44th minutes. Both were converted by Hugh Corkery, who has been in impressive form of late.

At last, Clondalkin were able to go on the attack for Luke Noone to dot down on the back of the industry of Brian Doyle, Luke Swayne, Darren Madden and Niall Nolan.

It didn’t take long for normal service to be resumed, Mahon completing his hat-trick ahead of two more from Dave O’Connor and Tristan Leffers.

Kilkenny now progress to the next round in a tricky draw away to North Kildare in Kilcock.
