Former world number three Stan Wawrinka will be on cloud nine on Tuesday after upsetting seventh-seed Holger Rune in three thrilling sets in the third round. The win will feel all the more special after Rune beat him in three sets at the Paris Masters late last November, where one of the more unlikely feuds began at the net and showed no signs of letting on Monday. The scheduling at Indian Wells is not the 37-year-old veteran’s friend, though, as he has less than 24 hours to prepare to face world number 13 Jannik Sinner. 21-year-old Sinner has played one match fewer and spent much less time on court so far with two solid wins over Richard Gasquet and Adrian Mannarino and he only recently bat Wawrinka handily at the Rotterdam Open last month to level their head-to-head at 2-2. The slower conditions at Indian Wells better-suit Wawrinka’s awesome power but the Swiss will likely be feeling his legs early in this match and it would be a big surprise to see anything other than a win for cool, calm and collected Sinner. Three sets are a distinct possibility, though, as Sinner has been pressed hard so far this week and it is likely that the Indian Wells crowd pulls hard for Wawrinka here. Back Sinner to win outright.
